Adoption Process

Guatemalan Adoptions, NFP will assist you throughout your adoption journey. Our Intercountry Coordinator will work closely with you to ensure you obtain all the necessary documents for your dossier, will also help you file your USCIS forms, and if you reside in Illinois, will work along with our Social Worker in order to obtain your Illinois Foster Home License.

The adoption process is as follows:

1. Complete application

2. File USCIS I-600A form

3. Complete Home Study and Illinois Foster Home License (for Illinois residents only)

4. Complete dossier documents

5. Receive USCIS I-171 approval

6. After receiving USCIS approval and completing dossier documents you will begin the referral waiting period

7. A referral will be presented to you in a form of initial medical information and pictures

8. Once referral is accepted, your dossier is sent to the representative Attorney in Guatemala along with a Power of Attorney

9. Guatemala process takes place (approximately 6-12 months)

10. Travel to Guatemala after process is finalized to bring your child home. Time to stay in Guatemala is about 4 days
